TN bans mobile phones in schools
Express news service Tags : Posted: Wednesday, Oct 17, 2007 at 0151 hrs CHENNAI, OCTOBER 16:The Tamil Nadu Government has issued an order imposing a ban on the use of cellphones by students within school premises. The order comes in the wake of a state-wide agitation on Monday by the PMK, an ally of the ruling DMK, demanding a ban on cell phones in schools like in Karnataka.
According to a press release, the State School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said anxious parents, educationists and members of the public had brought to the Government’s notice that students were getting distracted by use of cellphones and messaging in school premises.
The Minister also noted that an increasing number of students were busy sending SMSes instead of concentrating on studies. Now with the ban, students would show more interest in studies, he said.
The School Education Secretary had been directed to give necessary advise in this regard to students and their parents, he said.Pary Mohan, the state president of the PMK’s students’ wing, said there had been several instances of pornographic MMS being sent by students. Recently, the police had taken a youth, an engineer, into custody, for sending pornographic material to other students on their cellphones.
